FABER and FADIR tests

Diagnostic examinations for hip labral tear, which may also manifest with mechanical symptoms (clicking, snapping).

FABER:  flexion, abduction and external rotation of the hip joint

  • sensitivity 88% for intraarticular pathology
  • not very specific

FADIR:  flexion, adduction and internal rotation of the hip joint

  • sensitivity 75-96% for intraarticular pathology
  • not very specific

Confirmatory test for hip labral tear is an MRI arthrogram.  But if low suspicion for labral tear, start with plain X-ray and/or conventional MRI.
